When It Doesn't Make Sense

Life often surprises us with challenges we never expected. There are times when everything seems to fall apart all at once, and we find ourselves in the middle of a storm, struggling just to keep going. In those moments, it’s hard to reach out for help because survival takes all our strength. Yet, even when life doesn’t make sense, God is present and working behind the scenes.

Understanding the Storms of Life

This experience is common, yet Scripture offers comfort and guidance. Psalm 37:23 reminds us that “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.” Even when we don’t understand the path ahead, Proverbs 16:9 assures us that “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” God is directing our journey, even when it feels uncertain.

Holding on to God’s Promises

The Bible is filled with promises that remind us God is faithful, even in hardship. Romans 8:28 tells us, “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.” This means that what seems like chaos or pain is part of a bigger plan. Genesis 50:20 shows us how God can turn what the enemy meant for evil into something good. Isaiah 54:17 promises, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper.”

Jesus never promised a life without trouble. In John 16:33, He said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This truth gives us hope and courage to face our trials.

What We Must Do as Believers

When life doesn’t make sense, our response as believers is crucial. We must:

  • Have faith even when we don’t understand

  • Trust God to guide our steps

  • Do our best with what He has placed before us

  • Allow ourselves to rest without guilt

Trusting God doesn’t mean we have all the answers. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Rest is not a sign of weakness but an act of faith. Jesus invites the weary to come to Him and find rest (Matthew 11:28). Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still and know that I am God.” In stillness, we find peace and strength.

How Faith Grows Through Trials

Difficult seasons are not wasted time. Romans 5:3-5 explains how suffering produces perseverance, perseverance builds character, and character leads to hope. This process strengthens our faith and spiritual maturity. James 1:2-4 encourages us to “Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

I have seen this truth in my own life and in the lives of many women in our community. When we hold on to God’s promises and rest in His presence, we emerge stronger and more hopeful.

Living with Faith When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

It’s okay to admit when you don’t understand what’s happening. It’s okay to feel tired and overwhelmed. But don’t lose sight of God’s faithfulness. He is still in control, still working, and still loving you deeply.

Here are some practical ways to live out your faith during hard times:

  • Pray regularly, even if it’s just a few words asking for strength

  • Read Scripture that reminds you of God’s promises

  • Connect with a trusted friend or mentor who can support you

  • Allow yourself moments of rest without guilt or shame

  • Write down your prayers and God’s answers to see His faithfulness over time

Remember, faith is a journey, not a destination. When life doesn’t make sense, choose to trust God’s process, rest in His presence, and hold firmly to His promises.
